A second career that stuck
Insurance was not the plan.
I was on the tail end of 43 years in the Navy Reserve — about to walk away as a Chief Petty Officer and wondering what came next.
Along the way, I had earned a Master’s in Telecommunications Science at SMU, worked as an engineer at MCI, and raised a family.
A friend thought “we” should get “our” insurance licenses. He never even took a class. I did.
What was supposed to be something to pass the time became an important part of my life. Ten years later, I was still doing it.
Why? Because from the start, it felt like I was helping people make decisions that really matter — about their health, their money and the people they care about.
I didn’t build SafeFare to become a big agency. I built it for people like my mother, my neighbors and my friends from church. They want straight answers. They want plain English. They want to know what is out there that actually fits what they need.
Why Roderick explains Medicare the way he does
The clearest Medicare lesson he got came from his mother.
Roderick was studying for his insurance license and struggling with the way the textbooks explained Medicare. His mother had already lived with Medicare for more than twenty years. Sitting at the kitchen table, she helped him see the structure instead of the alphabet soup.
The lesson was not that everyone should choose the same thing. It was that people understand complicated choices better when someone starts with the decision in front of them and explains the pieces in ordinary language.
